OER for EDC 3100 Social Science in Childhood Education

For this project I worked on redesigning EDC 3100 Social Science in Childhood Education to become a Zero Textbook Cost Course.  The course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the standards, curricula, and methods of teaching social studies in a childhood setting. The students learn pedagogical strategies and develop critical thinking skills concerning curriculum content and the creation and implementation of classroom activities. One of the most interesting challenges about the materials used in this course is that we have to address pedagogical considerations and  methods for teaching social studies, as well as some of the content covered in social studies. In addition, it was essential to include multimodal materials to make the…

    Excited to get started

I am starting my third semester at KBCC and am excited to participate in this project. I have dedicated my career to advocating for students and families and believe that converting this course will make it more accessible to students. The price of a textbook should not be an obstacle and I am hopeful that in the end, students will have more flexibility in their education.

Reflection on converting EDC2200: Art in Education Workshop to OER

This semester I converted EDC2200 Art in Education Workshop to an OER course. I have avoided using a textbook for many years, not just because of the prohibitive cost of most textbooks, but also to avoid the possibility of a single/narrow take on a subject governed by a publishing company. Choosing from a diverse array of materials allows for a wider range of perspective, narratives & counternarratives. While my course had been Zero Textbook, during the conversion process I realized that not all my resources were easily nor universally accessible. It was a lot of work to find universally accessible resources! The benefits, however, were many: I had to read…

    Final Reflection

This semester, I worked on a course conversion for EDC 2400: Teaching Emergent Bilinguals.  One of the biggest challenges was to examine the wide range of materials that are available online and select them to ensure that not only do they address the content of the course, but also that they present multiple means of representation, giving learners various ways of accessing new content. As I redesigned the course syllabus, I included materials that are to be assigned as homework or used during class, as well as additional resources that might be useful for students and other instructors. I included videos, blogs, podcasts, and articles that can be accessed through…

Reflecting on OER for EDC 2500

I developed EDC 2500 into an OER course and taught this updated version of the course this semester. Designing a fresh syllabus surfaced a lot of ideas about the way that the course could go. I was constantly scaling back a bit and keeping myself in check, prioritizing readings, activities, and assignments. I was able to find many wonderful articles and online materials – it was hard not use all of them. But, I knew I couldn’t since I wholeheartedly believe that focus is critical and a scope and sequence that scaffolds learning based on prior experience and knowledge is key to growth. The design was a process of making…

Intro & A new vision for our capstone course – EDC 90

Hello! I teach in the Education Program – BEH Department and have been an educator for my entire career.  I spent decades in grades PreK-12 before shifting to higher education.  I consider it a privilege to work in a community college with preservice teachers as they examine their beliefs, articulate their teaching philosophy and begin to develop a professional identity . The Education Program has been engaged in a process of development and growth.  As course coordinator of EDC 90, I facilitate the work of a committee engaged in examining and re-envisioning this capstone course. Together, we drafted a vision and created a menu of possibilities for the course.  This…

Challenges and Possibilities of Creating an OER for a Social Foundations of Education Course

Hi there – This is an introductory post about creating an OER for the Education Program’s EDC 200 – Social Foundations of Education course. To understand the goals and challenges of creating an OER for this course, I think it’s helpful to begin by giving a little background and history about the course. EDC 200 is the first course students in the Education major take but it’s also the most theoretical one. As is the case in most teacher ed programs, the course lays the theoretical “foundation” that students will need to meaningfully engage with the mostly more methods-focused courses that will follow. When I came to the college in…

    Introduction and Goal

Hi! I am finally getting around to writing my introduction on here. I am looking forward to creating EDC 2500 into an OER course. I have been drawn to OER because of accessibility and also because I believe drawing from multiple sources creates a well-rounded experience for the students and exposes them to multiple perspectives. I think sticking to a textbook can make a course sometimes feels static and too prescriptive, whereas drawing from multiple sources based on student needs positions the content to become more dynamic and relevant. I believe that seeing and recognizing relevance is key to motivation. So, my goal is to ensure that key content is…
