Course Conversion for MAT 1500
I am honored to be part of this fellowship. My primary goal is to develop an accessible syllabus and designate the course as having zero textbook cost. Through this professional development experience, I hope to deepen my understanding of open pedagogy and open educational resources and to incorporate these approaches into my teaching in the future.

Developing OER for Speech 1100 – Basic Communication Skills and Practice
I chose to convert Speech 11 with some hesitation. This introductory course in listening and speaking, formally titled Basic Communication Skills and Practice, comes with layers of complexity. Before I get into why this conversion feels both necessary and daunting, let me paint a picture of the course. Speech 11 is fundamentally about developing the comprehension of verbal and nonverbal communication and strengthening listening skills, particularly critical listening. Think of it as the foundation that students need before they ever stand up to give a public speech, it is the very beginning stages of presentational skills. Here’s where it gets complicated, my students are non-native American English speakers with varied…

OER for EDC 3100 Social Science in Childhood Education
For this project I worked on redesigning EDC 3100 Social Science in Childhood Education to become a Zero Textbook Cost Course. The course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the standards, curricula, and methods of teaching social studies in a childhood setting. The students learn pedagogical strategies and develop critical thinking skills concerning curriculum content and the creation and implementation of classroom activities. One of the most interesting challenges about the materials used in this course is that we have to address pedagogical considerations and methods for teaching social studies, as well as some of the content covered in social studies. In addition, it was essential to include multimodal materials to make the…

Why Did This Fellowship Make Me Think of DEI? :)
Maybe it was just this particular moment we’ve been experiencing nationwide, or maybe not… I had not anticipated that reviewing a syllabus with the intent of making it ZTC or open, would make me ponder equity down to the smallest details. More specifically, our last session, Open Pedagogy, gave me a chance to review the need for taking an active stance to promote diversity. This reminded me of how setting up the tune from the start ( syllabus) helps us make our classroom environment more just and welcoming. Validating students’ identities from the design of the class, choice of materials, and even including them in decision making processes, such as assessment choices…

A return to the past for English 30: Introduction to Literature — Developing a course pack, OER style
Back before the pandemic, I was a fan of course packs. Customizing this booklet for the class, complete with an interesting cover, helped me plan out the semester, stay organized, and provide a no-cost solution to students. (At this time, the copy center would make full class sets for me, sometimes even providing spiral binding.) I made a digital copy to be stored on Blackboard and annotating this text was a major course assignment for the class. The days of my course packs quickly slipped away during the pandemic. I went from a largely paper-oriented class to a wholly digital one. Now, each unit has associated readings, organized into units.…

I’m eager to dive deeply into my syllabus and explore innovative ways to enhance inclusivity in all my courses. Specific goals are to create an accessible, equitable, and welcoming learning environment that reduces barriers for my students. I am hopeful that I will find creative strategies to ensure diverse perspectives are represented in my teaching materials.I look forward to sharing ideas with all of you.

Excited to get started
I am starting my third semester at KBCC and am excited to participate in this project. I have dedicated my career to advocating for students and families and believe that converting this course will make it more accessible to students. The price of a textbook should not be an obstacle and I am hopeful that in the end, students will have more flexibility in their education.

Reflection on converting EDC2200: Art in Education Workshop to OER
This semester I converted EDC2200 Art in Education Workshop to an OER course. I have avoided using a textbook for many years, not just because of the prohibitive cost of most textbooks, but also to avoid the possibility of a single/narrow take on a subject governed by a publishing company. Choosing from a diverse array of materials allows for a wider range of perspective, narratives & counternarratives. While my course had been Zero Textbook, during the conversion process I realized that not all my resources were easily nor universally accessible. It was a lot of work to find universally accessible resources! The benefits, however, were many: I had to read…

Final Reflection
This semester, I worked on a course conversion for EDC 2400: Teaching Emergent Bilinguals. One of the biggest challenges was to examine the wide range of materials that are available online and select them to ensure that not only do they address the content of the course, but also that they present multiple means of representation, giving learners various ways of accessing new content. As I redesigned the course syllabus, I included materials that are to be assigned as homework or used during class, as well as additional resources that might be useful for students and other instructors. I included videos, blogs, podcasts, and articles that can be accessed through…
