Building your scholarly profile with the CUNY Academic Commons (or how to make your own website for free in 10 minutes or less)
The CUNY Academic Commons is an open source platform designed to support academic community-building, project development and publishing, teaching and learning, and social networking across CUNY. More simply, it’s free web space for the CUNY community (in fact, the site you’re reading this on is on the Commons!). You can do a lot on the Commons- you can use it for teaching (like these courses in Biology, True Crime/US Judiciary System, and International Relations,), program or project websites (such as UnHomeless NYC, Kingsborough Holocaust Center , KCeL, and OE@KCC), even conference websites (like the CUNY Language, Society, and Culture Conference). You can also make a scholarly profile website, like KCC…

A tale of two pictures, or what we’ve done so far
As this is the beginning of Open Education Week (a holiday we don’t really observe at KCC, because it’s the first week of our spring semester, and we’re all just too busy and excited meeting our new students!), it seems a good time to reflect on what we’ve done so far. CUNY’s OER Initiative officially began dispersing funds to CUNY campuses in 2017, and since then, KCC has been extremely busy! One way to see all of this work is to check out the OER that have been created at KCC– there’s actually so many that we had to split it into syllabi that use OER for Zero Textbook Cost…

Call for Participants- Open Course Refreshers!
Has it been a while since the course you’re teaching was converted to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) materials? Are you currently teaching a ZTC course, but would like to update it in a supportive and funded environment? Would you enjoy working with others to explore more about the wide world of open educational practices while updating your teaching materials? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then please apply to join our inaugural Open Course Refreshers Cohort! Refreshers will meet four times on Zoom during the Spring Semester to expand their knowledge of open educational practices and open platforms and to explore newly released OER and ZTC materials…

ZTC Attribute vs No Textbooks Assigned: Why is correct course marking important, and how can you do it?
If you have gone through the effort of designing your course to use Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC)1 materials so your students can learn without the additional burden of buying textbooks, thank you! But there are a few more steps you must take to mark your course with the ZTC attribute in CUNYFirst, and the process is definitely more annoying than it should be. Before explaining how to ensure your course is marked correctly, let’s talk about the why: applying the ZTC Attribute correctly is extremely important. First, it helps students find the courses that are actually ZTC, as the attribute can be used as a filter in the CUNY Class…

CUNY Manifold Open Studio Hours
CUNY Manifold is a platform for scholarly publishing, teaching, and learning. It has already been used by several groups at Kingsborough to create, share, and teach with OER- check out HUM 1: Modern Humanities and General Biology OER Laboratory Manual for inspiration. You can also use Manifold to publish work created by your students, as in these collections: Becoming Ethnographers and My Slipper Floated Away. We’re always happy to discuss ways Manifold might be interesting for your work, but if you want support right from the source (and it’s excellent support!) you can learn more and register for their Open Studio Hours here: Manifold Open Studio Office Hours

2023-2024: OE@KCC’s Big Year
It’s a new academic year, and we’re going for a big one! We’ve got a new name, a new student fellow, and new year-long professional development fellowships for open education liaisons, open pedagogy, and teaching on the CUNY Academic Commons. We’ll also be working with faculty to convert four majors to Zero Textbook Cost programs- it’s going to be a very big year! First up, our new name. We may have started with OER, but the KCC community has continued well beyond that entry point to explore many different aspects of open educational practices. As we seek to support the expanded horizons of our open educators, the name Open Education…

The 2023 Kingsborough Open Education Showcase
On April 27, 2023 the Kingsborough community gathered virtually for the 2023 Open Education Showcase. We kicked off with a keynote by Dr. Maha Bali, an internationally renowned speaker on Open Education, who led an interactive, provocative, and inspiring talk entitled “Towards Openness that Promotes Social Justice in Times of Uncertainty.” Two Kingsborough students and one alum then took the stage to educate their professors on the impact open educational practices has had on their learning and career practices. The students spoke passionately about how connection, relevance and choice, mentoring, and individualized attention really make a difference in their learning. The students graciously answered questions from their audience as well,…
