Final Reflection on Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the CUNY OER scale-up initiative by customizing, substantially editing, and adding my own contribution in the full-length textbook. During this year I worked on creating original content and completing a textbook Principals of Macroeconomics 3e: A Revised, Online Textbook for Kingsborough Community College Students. This book is a revised OER Introduction to Macroeconomics textbook designed for Kingsborough Community College students enrolled in Macroeconomics ECO 1200. It is a derivative of the OpenStax Introduction to Macroeconomics 3e by David Shapiro, Daniel MacDonald and Steven Greenlaw and “Principals of Macroeconomics 3e: A Revised, Online Textbook for Bronx Community College Students” by…

Spring 2025 /Final OFAR Blog
Anti-racist Practices in the Criminal Legal SystemIt is always best practice to be thoughtful about how race is discussed in a criminal justice class. The Criminal Justice Faculty, which developed an OFAR action plan, approached the topic carefully and honestly for their students. Even with recent changes in how race-related topics are viewed, it remains essential for students to learn the truth about how the criminal justice system operates. They can’t fully understand the system without exploring how it affects different groups of people, especially in terms of race. Students in the KBCC Criminal Justice Program engaged with real data showing how people of color are often treated differently in…

My OFAR Takeaways
Being part of this seminar enabled me to take a true look at myself, my values, my identity while thinking deeply around my pedagogy and my curriculum. The online discussion space allowed me to be open, vulnerable and honest while also learning a great deal from the other members of my cohort. One of my core values as an educator is to create a safe, supportive open space where each student can share, explore their identity and share from their perspectives and worldviews. I hope to create a space where difficult conversations can be had in a way where students connect and learn from each other. In my OFAR Action…

OER Reflections
In my first post I referenced my hesitation to produce OER content. I can now confidently say that I have increased that confidence through my experience in converting my Oral Interpretation speech course to OER/ZTC. What catapulted me into learning was Shawna Brandel’s clear instruction with great supporting documents. She did especially well with showcasing the work of other OER contributors which was of great value. I have included some of her recommendations in my content which I look forward to sharing with my students. One of the greatest benefits of this training was the emphasis on inclusion in the classroom (and workplace), and on various teaching strategies and pedagogues…

Final Reflection
This semester, I worked on a course conversion for EDC 2400: Teaching Emergent Bilinguals. One of the biggest challenges was to examine the wide range of materials that are available online and select them to ensure that not only do they address the content of the course, but also that they present multiple means of representation, giving learners various ways of accessing new content. As I redesigned the course syllabus, I included materials that are to be assigned as homework or used during class, as well as additional resources that might be useful for students and other instructors. I included videos, blogs, podcasts, and articles that can be accessed through…

A Learning Experience
Having converted classes before, I came into this second round with some experience. However, it soon became clear that this experience would bring different joys and challenges than the first. Among the joys was another opportunity for peer collaboration. The challenges, however, were more intense as they concerned re-conceptualizing and re-working the syllabus to increase the rigor of the assignments while maintaining student engagement. While reworking the syllabus, I thought it important to balance robust learning with student-friendly course content. Vital to successful and useful student instruction is a keen awareness of the audience and a commitment to teach and provide content that aligns with the audience’s capacity for sustained…
