A return to the past for English 30: Introduction to Literature — Developing a course pack, OER style

Back before the pandemic, I was a fan of course packs. Customizing this booklet for the class, complete with an interesting cover, helped me plan out the semester, stay organized, and provide a no-cost solution to students. (At this time, the copy center would make full class sets for me, sometimes even providing spiral binding.) I made a digital copy to be stored on Blackboard and annotating this text was a major course assignment for the class. The days of my course packs quickly slipped away during the pandemic. I went from a largely paper-oriented class to a wholly digital one. Now, each unit has associated readings, organized into units.…

    OER in PSY 32 Course

I have started working with Professor Brandle in her OER Course Conversion professional development and my goal is to provide access for my students to have a variety of resources that will help support their growth. I am excited to learn about all of the possibilities in OER. I like to supplement my class with readings such as case studies, novels, videos, documentaries and additional sources that align with the course. I hope to find novels that are also OER that my students can have access to. My goal is to provide an equitable learning environment for all of my students.

    Creating OER in Collaboration

For the past year I have been working with Michelle Turnbull (Bergen Community College, formerly with KCC/College Now) on researching and writing an article about the benefits of creating OER in collaboration. Through our research for this article, we have come to understand that OER actually foster a collaborative spirit at every turn–from how OER are shared to the ways in which we interface with OER (shared annotation on platforms such as Manifold, etc). I’m interested in discussing this notion–that OER actually seems to encourage a sort of “group effort”–from the development of OER to how students interface with the text. As a theatre practitioner, I am used to working…

    Educating the Special Educator

As I approach the completion of my syllabus through this project, I am so excited by all I have learned. While I always thought I was meeting the needs of all learners in my classes, I feel I have fallen short with the accessibility of my syllabus. I have learned so much, and as I finished my OER for EDC 5000, I immediately went to my 5100 syllabus and started to make changes. While I didn’t know what to expect when I started, I am thrilled by how much I have learned. It has opened up so many new things for me and I am excited for the new semester.

The Value of OER in K-12!

For the past six years I have been co-coordinating the Humanities course for College Now at Kingsborough. During the pandemic, my colleague Michelle Turnbull (fellow co-coordinator for the course) and I decided to create an OER for this class. The result has been so exciting. Through support from the OER program on the KCC campus (thank you Shawna Brandle!!), Michelle and I received grant funds to support a truly collaborative effort that enabled the creation of this OER, entitled MODERN HUMANITIES. One of the most compelling discoveries throughout this OER creation process, which was not even a consideration at the time we decided to create MODERN HUMANITIES, was just how…

    Excited to get started

I am starting my third semester at KBCC and am excited to participate in this project. I have dedicated my career to advocating for students and families and believe that converting this course will make it more accessible to students. The price of a textbook should not be an obstacle and I am hopeful that in the end, students will have more flexibility in their education.

    A multi-semester site: crime zines

I am going to try to construct a site that can house readings using hypothesis annotation software, the course syllabus, weekly work, a research resource library, a description of our collaborative project, and a showcase of digital and in real life (irl) zines about what is “true” and what is not about crime stories with student input and permission. I am considering a blog or vlog as well. I am hoping for an aesthetic design that includes a minimalist and clear layout that keep viewers in the site, creates a sense of our collective identity, and that respects privacy. After several years away from the Commons, there will be a…
